As BJP mounts pressure, Punjab withdraws VAT amendment

Chandigarh, July 29 (IANS) Buckling to pressure from alliance partner BJP, Punjab Deputy Chief Minister Sukhbir Singh Badal Tuesday ordered withdrawal of an amendment made in the Punjab VAT act which made it mandatory for traders and industrialists to remit VAT on the stocks as well. The Punjab government had brought an amendment recently in the VAT (Value Added Tax) Act, 2005 to check evasion of input tax credit (ITC). While the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leadership in the state, which is part of the government, mounted pressure to withdraw the amendment, various traders’ associations had met Badal, who is the excise and taxation minister, seeking its withdrawal. The excise department has 249,421 registered traders out of which only 1,063 traders paid more than Rs.one crore tax per annum that becomes 85 percent of the total VAT collection of Punjab.

Shabana Azmi misses Farooque Sheikh on Eid

The two acted in movies like “Anjuman” and “Lorie”.

“Missing Farooque. Every Eid we used to have a fierce competition ki sheer qorma kiske ghar ka behtar hai,” Shabana tweeted.

Indian nurses now caught in conflict in Libya

New Delhi, July 29 (IANS) In a near replay of the incidents in Iraq, large numbers of Indian nurses are caught in spiralling violence in Libya, where rival militant groups seek to control the capital’s international airport, and have approached the Indian mission for help and even evacuation. Taking note of the fighting, Indian Ambassador in Libya, Azar A. H. Khan, met the nurses in the Tripoli hospitals and assured them of their safety. The ambassador, however, said that only some Indian nationals, mostly nurses, have approached the embassy for help in leaving the country. Panic gripped the Indian nationals after incessant shelling rocked the area around Tripoli airport and elsewhere, in a two week-long battle since mid-July.
