Turkey's PM Erdogan addresses members of parliament from ruling AK Party during meeting at Turkish parliament in Ankara

An association of Jewish Americans said Turkish Prime Minister Tayyip Erdogan has become the world’s “most virulent anti-Israeli leader” and demanded he return an award it gave him a decade ago, partly for his efforts to broker peace between Israel and Palestinians. The New York-based American Jewish Congress awarded Erdogan its “Profile of Courage” award in 2004 for what it said was his stance on fighting terrorism and working towards a peace. “Now, we want it back,” the association’s president, Jack Rosen, said in an open letter to Erdogan dated July 23 and made public on Thursday. He cited the Turkish leader’s comments last weekend that Israel had “surpassed Hitler in barbarism” through its attacks on Gaza.

“Shakespeare in Love” adapter revels in rave reviews in London

July 25, 2014 0

By Edward Baran LONDON (Reuters) – The Disney-backed stage adaptation of the hit film “Shakespeare in Love” won nearly across-the-board rave reviews in London this week, to the relief of its creators who are pleased that their big gamble looks set to pay off. The show, based on the 1998 Hollywood movie starring Gwyneth Paltrow and Joseph Fiennes, received a standing ovation from its opening night audience on Wednesday at the Noel Coward theatre in London’s West End theatre district. With the backing of the Disney organisation, which is behind money-spinners like the “The Lion King”, and co-production by leading British producer Sonia Friedman, the stage revamp has gone straight to a commercial theatre instead of having the benefit of a first run at a government-subsidised venue, as is common in British theatre. “Obviously something like this was such a huge production which is probably the biggest play that has even been put on in the West End,” playwright Lee Hall, who did the adaptation from the movie script that was in part written by Tom Stoppard, told Reuters on Wednesday.

U.S. House committee votes to authorize lawsuit against Obama

U.S. President Obama disembarks from Air Force One as he arrives at Los Angeles International Airport

By Annika McGinnis WASHINGTON (Reuters) – Republicans in the U.S. House of Representatives on Thursday took another step toward authorizing a lawsuit against President Barack Obama, claiming he has overstepped his executive powers. In a partisan vote of 7-4, the House Rules Committee approved the legislation, likely setting it up for consideration by the full House next week. The Republican initiative already has spawned a bitter debate with Democrats less than four months before elections that will determine the political control of Congress next year. House Speaker John Boehner wrote in June that Obama’s use of executive orders, including raising the minimum wage for federal contractors and stopping deportations of undocumented youths brought to the United States by their parents, risked giving him a “king-like authority.” But Boehner has tamped down calls from some fellow Republicans who have called for impeachment proceedings against Obama, which would be a first step toward removing him from office.
