Modi government to give greater push to Look East Policy: Sushma

August 24, 2014 0

Hanoi, Aug 24 (IANS) The Narendra Modi government will strive to give a greater push to India’s Look East Policy, turning it into “acting East”, External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj said in the Vietnamese capital Sunday as she arrived on a three-day visit. Sushma Swaraj, addressing a gathering of the Indian diaspora here, said the Modi government, which rode to power on the back of a huge mandate, “will not disappoint” the people of India. The minister, who is visiting her sixth neighbouring country since she took over as minister in mid-May, also said that India would seek to cooperate with Vietnam in rice exports. India has helped Vietnam with its knowhow in rice cultivation through a rice centre set up here, she said adding “look today, at how they have left us behind” in rice exports.

Venice film fest, opening this week, is still a cinema lifeline

A statue of a lion, the symbol of the 69th Venice Film Festival, is silhouetted in Venice

By Michael Roddy and Isla Binnie LONDON/ROME (Reuters) – Saverio Costanzo, the Italian director of the New York City-set low-budget drama “Hungry Hearts” that will compete for the top prize at the Venice Film Festival opening this week, sees the exposure his film will get as a godsend. “We need the festival to make a buzz so people know about the film and Venice is a festival that is full of passion.” That is a welcome endorsement for the Venice Film Festival’s 71st edition, which opens on Wednesday with the much-anticipated world premiere of “Birdman” by Mexican director Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu and starring Michael Keaton as a former superhero trying to make a comeback. Although it is the world’s oldest film festival and perhaps its most glamorous, with stars chauffeured to the red carpet on Lido Island by motorboat water taxis instead of limousines, it struggles, a bit like the city, to keep its head above water. The festival’s director, Alberto Barbera, who was brought back in 2012 after an eight-year hiatus, has introduced a host of innovations to keep Venice relevant at a time when the Tribeca Festival in New York in April steals some of its artistic thunder and the Toronto Film Festival that begins next week has become a global cinematic mega mall.

Manish Tewari terms former CAG Vinod Rai’s disclosure as sensationalism

August 24, 2014 0

New Delhi, Aug 24 (ANI): Congress leader Manish Tewari on Sunday described the new disclosures reportedly coming from former Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG) Vinod Rai as yet another sensationalism and wondered why these facts were never brought to light into public domain earlier. Speaking to ANI on the former CAG’s disclosure that he was under pressure reportedly by the former UPA government to drop names from the CAG reports, Tewari asked, “Sensationalism has been a staple of the former CAG, therefore, after putting sensational numbers out in the public space, which completely vitiated the public discourse between 2010-2014, now you have this latest bout of sensationalism. Was it not incumbent upon the former CAG to put those facts into public domain to bring into notice of the country, to bring it to the notice to the public accounts committee?” “If he was being pressurised by anybody to include or delete any names , was this nugget of sensationalism being deliberately saved for what is the favourite post-retirement plan of certain public servants to write a book, after they have demitted office and enjoyed all the fruits and loaves of service,” he added.
