WASHINGTON (AP) — At an impasse on immigration, House Republicans and Senate Democrats advanced competing proposals Wednesday for dealing with tens of thousands of young migrants showing up at the southern border. Each side quickly ruled the other’s approach unacceptable, leaving any solution unclear with Congress’ annual August recess looming.
New Delhi, July 23 (ANI): Veteran Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader, Lal Krishna Advani on Wednesday expressed regret off- the-camera, over the incident of Shiv Sena MPs allegedly forcing a Muslim man to break his fast and hoped that the concerned MPs would offer an apology. “What happened isn’t right, even Parliamentary Affairs Minister has spoken against it, believe concerned MPs have apologized,” Advani said. As soon as the Lok Sabha met for the day, several Opposition members raised the issue and termed it as violation of religious beliefs. This led the Lok Sabha Speaker, Sumitra Mahajan to adjourn the house twice.
New Delhi, July 23 (ANI): Leaders of various political outfits cut across party lines on Wednesday to condemn Shiv Sena MPs for allegedly abusing and forcing a Muslim catering supervisor at the Maharashtra Sadan to break his Ramzan fast and eat a chapatti. “The MPs should tender a public apology, there is no place for this kind of majoritarianism,” said Congress leader Manish Tewari. Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) leader Majid Memon said an investigation must take place in the case and strict action should be taken against people involved. “Shiv Sena isn’t a responsible party and it has always been a group of anti-social people,” added NCP general secretary Tariq Anwar.
New Delhi, July 23 (ANI): Prime Minister Narendra Modi today offered floral tributes to noted freedom fighter Lokmanya Bal Gangadhar Tilak, on his 158th birth anniversary in the Central Hall of Parliament. Lok Saba Speaker Sumitra Mahajan, External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj, Union Minister for Urban Development, Parliamentary Affairs Minister M. Venkaiah Naidu, Information and Broadcasting Minister Prakash Javadekar, senior BJP leader L.K. Advani, and other dignitaries were also present on the occasion. He was the first leader of the Indian Independence Movement. He is known for his quote, “Swaraj is my birthright, and I shall have it!” in India.

To do that, he must deal with Puan Maharani, the politically ambitious daughter of former president Megawati Sukarnoputri and a powerful figure in the Indonesian Democratic Party-Struggle (PDI-P) that her mother heads and which propelled Jokowi into the presidential palace. For some, there is a risk of a power struggle among the rank-and-file of Indonesia’s most popular party that could muddle Jokowi’s agenda in parliament, where Puan is party leader. “Puan does have followers … of course, they are threatened by somebody like Jokowi.” Puan is heir to a political dynasty that goes back to her grandfather and founding president, Sukarno.
By Ian Simpson WASHINGTON (Reuters) – On Christmas Eve 1910, future U.S. President Warren Harding wrote his mistress Carrie Phillips a letter that began: “There are no words, at my command, sufficient to say the full extent of my love for you … mad, tender, devoted, ardent, eager, passion-wild.” Harding praises Phillips’ “matchless embrace” and adds: “To have and to hold you, in happiness to you, exclusively, in satisfying and satisfied love, would be the triumph of living and loving.” The message is among about 1,000 pages of sometimes steamy love letters between Harding and Phillips that the Library of Congress will put online on July 29 after a 50-year court seal expires. “In looking at this collection, it’s astonishing the amount of misinformation about him, in fact, about everybody connected with him,” the library’s Manuscript Division chief, James Hutson, told the audience, which included Harding relatives.
