Pranab Mukherjee then launched his own party by name Rashtriya Samajwadi Congress, this party was afloat for 3 years from 1986 to 1989. Rashtriya Samajwadi Congress merged with INC in 1989. Pranab Mukherjee got his second major chance from Late P V Narasimha Rao and since then Pranab Mukherjee held important positions in Congress governments. He is the No. 2 person in present UPA government, the No. 1 being Prime Minister Manmohan Singh.
