Facebook is a social networking service and website. It was launched in February 2004. In just 8 years Facebook got more than 845 million active users. Facebook allows any one who declare themselves to be at least 13 years old to become registered users of the site.

Facebook as the name suggests was originally a simple program to display just the faces of girls, this program was scripted by Mark Zuckerberg in his college dorm room. Later Mark was hired by his three seniors to code a similar program that would have features like myspace but Mark ditched them in between and using the code he originally wrote for his seniors launched his own website. The seniors later sued him in court when Facebook became popular and it is said that the case was settled for USD 60 Million.

According to Social Media Today, in April 2010 an estimated 41.6% of the U.S. population had a Facebook account. Nevertheless, Facebook’s market growth started to stall in some regions, with the site losing 7 million active users in the United States and Canada in May 2011.

The Web site has won awards such as placement into the “Top 100 Classic Websites” by PC Magazine in 2007, and winning the “People’s Voice Award” from the Webby Awards in 2008. In a 2006 study conducted by Student Monitor, a New Jersey-based company specializing in research concerning the college student market, Facebook was named the second most popular thing among undergraduates, tied with beer and only ranked lower than the iPod.
